After 25 years of dormancy, life has been detected from a cult classic feature film franchise of the 80’s and 90’s. Fans of the Critters franchise will be excited to hear that their favorite furry hell-raising aliens are returning in an unexpected way. These furballs of trouble are gearing up to rampage their way onto your TV screen in a new series called Critters: A New Binge.
According to Variety, Warner Bros. Television Group announced Wednesday that Verizon’s go90 has ordered the series from its digital studio, Blue Ribbon Content. Variety goes on to report that Rupert Harvey and Barry Opper from the original franchise will be returning as producers while Jordan Rubin, Jon Kaplan, and Al Kaplan serve as the creative team. Bloody Disgusting highlights that Rubin and Jon are the same creative minds behind the outrageously over-the-top comedic horror, Zombeavers.
As described by Variety:
Critters: A New Binge will begin with the critters’ return to Earth. Having left behind one of their own from an earlier mission, the devilish hairballs from space turn the lives of Burbank, Cali., residents upside down while searching for their lost kin. Chaos and mayhem is sure to unfold in the traditional Critters way.
With Harvey and Opper attached to the project, the upcoming series already shows signs of remaining true to the original franchise. Incorporating the creative team behind Zombeavers is the perfect touch, which should add the necessary comedic element known to anyone familiar with Critters. Since the fourth and last Critters feature released in 1992, enough time has passed to ensure Critters: A New Binge to invoke nostalgia from an older audience as well as create a whole new generation of Critter lovers.
