Social media – is it the root of all evil? It seems to be the popular topic in horror films such as Unfriended and now the upcoming Friend Request. The main themes in these films are concerning popular students who have accepted lonely people who just want one friend. But before you make that click to add, maybe you should know more about who you are adding. Friend Request is basically a social media haunting flick… the popular student unfriends the lonely unpopular person and that person ends up killing themselves. So how is this one different than Unfriended? This might have some witchcraft elements to it. Let’s take a look at the most recent trailer.
A popular college student graciously accepts a social outcast’s online friend request, but soon finds herself fighting a demonic presence that wants to make her lonely by killing her closest friends.
The film was directed by Simon Verhoeven, who co-wrote the script with Matthew Ballen and Philip Koch. The cast includes Alycia Debnam-Carey (Fear the Walking Dead), Liesl Ahlers (Motsehare), Connor Paolo (Stake Land), Brit Morgan (Supergirl), Brooke Markham (The Foursome), William Moseley (The Chronicles of Narnia) and Sean Marquette (The Goldbergs).
Below are some clips that were released for the film.
Laura gets a friend request from the strange and mysterious Marina. Should she accept?
Marina and Laura talk about her new apartment. Marina already gives us the creepy stalker vibe that shouts out “stranger danger.”
Laura finds out some dark and disturbing things on Marina’s Facebook.
Marina is feeling left out by not being invited to Laura’s birthday party.
From everything that I have seen so far, I feel like yelling, “Stranger danger!” Marina is into some dark things and her ritualistic suicide is just going to spice the film up further. I expect jump scares galore in this film. I am not sure if I will like it or not, but I am willing to see it. At least it isn’t a found footage film like Unfriended.
Friend Request will be hitting theaters on September 22nd. Look forward to review to come! Let us know what you think in the comments below!
