George R.R. Martin’s ‘Nightflyers’ in Development with SYFY

We all know George R. R. Martin as the author of the popular Game of Thrones series. The series was turned into a top HBO television series with a strong fan base. Did you know that prior to writing the first book of the Game of Thrones series, he penned a novella Nightflyers? Set in a world far different from Game of Thrones, this novella is set in space. SYFY confirmed that they are planning to bring Nightflyers to the network and hope for success like Game of Thrones.

The series stars Gretchen Mol as Dr. Agatha Matheson. She is known for her past work in Boardwalk Empire, but she isn’t new to the sci-fi/thriller genre. She starred in The Thirteenth Floor in 1999. She most recently starred in Hulu’s original series Chance with Hugh Laurie. Nightflyers is set to air on SYFY here in the states. Universal Cable and Netflix acquired the first-run rights outside the US.

Official Synopsis:

Nightflyers follows eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath who embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system aboard The Nightflyer – a ship with a small tightknit crew and a reclusive captain — in the hope of making contact with alien life. But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place they start to question each other — and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought.

Jeff Buhler (Jacob’s Ladder) adapted Martin’s 30,000-word novella for the series, which opened up the famed author’s mind to how a multi-season series could work from the truncated source material. Buhler will also executive-produce alongside showrunner Daniel Cerone (The Blacklist).

The series will have a ten episode first season. No release date yet. This isn’t the first time that Nightflyers has been adapted for the screen. You may view the trailer here.

I believe we are in for a treat on this for this one. Definitely looking forward to this change from Game of Thrones. The book is currently out of print, BUT it is being released along with five other George R. R. Martin sci-fi stories in May.
