Women In Horror Month: The Best Of Katharine Isabelle

When the term “Scream Queen” is said, the top 3 women that usually come to mind are Jamie Lee Curtis, Danielle Harris, and Katharine Isabelle. This article is all about Ms. Isabelle and her greatest roles in the horror community. I want to honor the roles that Katharine Isabelle perfected and show why she’s one of the greatest Scream Queens of our generation!
(Warning: Spoilers below!)

Tamara – See No Evil 2 (2014)

Tamara is that one friend who parties, researches the macabre and kisses corpses. After Amy (Danielle Harris) can’t leave her job at the morgue to celebrate her birthday, her best friend, Tamara, brings her friends and loved ones there to surprise her. Tamara differs from Katharine’s other horror roles because she’s just so charismatic and goofy. It’s pretty evident in her performance that she was just having a heck of a time with her role.

Mary Mason – American Mary (2012)

Mary Mason is my personal favorite character that Katharine has played. I love a good revenge film, but American Mary was so much more than that. Katharine plays a medical student who starts to dabble in the world of body modification. After a traumatic night involving one of her mentors, she uses her newfound interests to exact revenge. I really love Mary’s development in this film. Like a flick of a switch, she went from a young, starving student to a cold, vengeful, morbid artist. I can’t imagine anyone more perfect for this role!

Ava – Supernatural TV series

I bet you forgot Katharine had a bit part in one of the early seasons of Supernatural. Hell, it’s been so long since I’ve seen them, I forgot, too! When we first meet Ava, she’s just a regular girl whose path crossed with the Winchesters by a telepathic connection with the younger brother, Sam. Her helpful, sweet-nature changes at the end of season 2 when it becomes apparent that only one of the gifted children can survive in a Battle Royale-type showdown. Her character was short-lived, but she was able to manipulate and keep her good-girl persona intact until it was time for her to kill.

Gibb – Freddy Vs. Jason (2003)

Gibb may have been a minor character in this slasher, but she’s definitely one of the most memorable. She’s the main protagonist’s alcoholic best friend whose boyfriend is the first to get killed. Soon, this poor soul is taunted by Freddy, who uses her boyfriend’s controlling tendencies to manipulate her. Her death was the very straw that broke the camel’s back and made Freddy and Jason enemies instead of allies. Gibb is a very troubled but sympathetic character.

Ginger – Ginger Snaps (2000)

Ginger Fitzgerald is the role that cemented Katharine’s status as a horror icon. Ginger is an outcast who’s obsessed with death. When she almost meets her end at the hands of a werewolf, her priorities change and popularity and looks seem more important. As she slowly starts to change into a werewolf herself, she becomes a badass killer and monster! She’s a character who absolutely couldn’t have been played by anyone else!

Katharine Isabelle is nothing short of a legend and badass in the horror community. I believe she puts herself into all of her roles, and she’s not afraid to have fun with her work. Who is your favorite character that Katharine Isabelle has portrayed? Let us know in the comments!

About Karli Lawson

I basically grew up watching horror films and spooky things. I watched my first horror film when I was 4 years old. I've wanted to be a writer ever since I've read Stephen King books in middle school. I love writing and talking about my favorite genre. I hope to one day be successful in screenwriting and filmmaking. Everything horror, of course!
